Delayed Gratification: One Room Challenge Fall 2020 Week 5-6

Delayed.

That word just about covers the last couple of weeks. Delayed. Deliveries for my One Room Challenge room is delayed. Writing the Week 5 post was delayed. Getting my house’s heat fixed is delayed. Getting my car inspected this week was delayed. Losing 50lbs is delayed. Seeing my friends and family now that I live within miles of them all is delayed. Finding out who won the Presidential election was/is delayed (depending on who you ask). But guess what? Even the final due date for submissions for the One Room Challenge is delayed!

Lucky me!

Thanks to Covid (for the most part) everyone in the world is struggling to receive things in a timely manner. Not enough staff to process orders, not enough delivery people to deliver orders, not enough manpower to make the orders. Add to that the fact that everyone who has been stuck at home staring at their walls every day has decided to hire all the tradespeople and redecorate, renovate and remodel and you have a shortage of supplies and available professional help if you needed it.

Tomorrow marks our one month anniversary of owning this house. I have so much to do around the place, and finding more to add to the list every day, including the icky things. We’ve caught four mice so far, by the way. That is not making me happy. I feel bad for the mice but I also feel bad for my house. GTFO already, you creepy little germ spreading buggers. Luckily they are just in the garage and the attic space above it but you know how they can get into any place, and I am itchy just thinking they might find a way into my kitchen. Blaghghgh!!!

Anyway…

I have done some random things like buy stuff at estate sales, which led to me spray painting things gold and doing quick refinish work to an antique table. This paint is the shizz, yo. So easy to use, quick coverage, and the right kind of gold. Some are too matte, too greenish, too glittery. This is the Goldilocks of gold spray paint.

I got these two ladies and this little green dragon. I loved the green but some of his spikes on the back of his head were chipped and super noticeable. A quick change and now my little dragon (named after the character in original Mulan movie) looks like a million bucks. You don’t really notice the broken spikes. Well, YOU will never notice them, anyway!

But that’s not all!

These products are also amazing and easy to use and perfect for the lazy restoration person like me. If I can’t get it done in a day or so, I am probably not going to want to do it.

I used this stuff, along with a couple of rags and that was really it. I did get some SANDING BLOCKS but honestly I was so excited to get it done, that I just dragged it from the car to the garage, wiped it all down to get the dust off and then I forgot about sanding it and just went at it with the restor-a-finish and I was happy enough. I’m not shooting for perfect. But it looks pretty freaking awesome even with skipping all the leg work.

Back to the delayed ORC

Are any of these things going into Project Kohut is Crazy? Who knows. Here are the things I want/need to do in there:

  • deal with the window seat cushion
  • install the ceiling light
  • add lamps
  • frame my special artwork
  • hang special artwork
  • hang up other art without messing up that flocking wallpaper
  • hang up whiteboard in a way that doesn’t look lame
  • clean out the closet
  • put functional storage in the closet
  • put my crap back in the closet in an organized fashion
  • change the hardware on the closet door
  • paint the doors in the room (that ain’t happenin’ this go ’round)
  • paint all the trim (or at least clean it)
  • find some more storage
  • get some office supplies
  • make it all look pretty
  • take photos
  • show you all
  • win a million dollars

Window Seat

Ok, so problem one with that is that nobody is available to make me a new one. The cushion was there, and it’s in fine shape but it has blue microfiber fabric with a plaid piping on the edges that just clashed with everything.

In a desperate attempt to just make it work, I tried to paint the plaid with some white fabric paint.

Then I sat there thinking, this is not ME. I am a professional, this is like a 6th grader’s craft project. I just quit that and threw some random pillows in there until I figured out what to do. Ozzy didn’t care.

Special Artwork

One of my closest friends just happens to have an amazing side gig taking professional photos of rock stars in his free time (and before Covid cancelled every concert on earth). It’s been so fun to watch his collection grow and I’m excited he’s selling his art now. I’m even more excited to own one of his photos. Thankfully the ORC official deadline was delayed because the print was delayed getting to me and I never would have made it in time. I just got it and now I have to frame it. Who knows how long that will take!

Dave Grohl is one of my favorite famous humans. Not just because I love the Foo Fighters, but because of the immense joy he seems to exude. Someone who truly appreciates his life, loves his work, gives back to others, and just has a lot of fun. I bet it surprises you that he is an inspiration for me and my business. I figure why not invite him to be in my office every day? And Taylor Hawkins in the background, he’s pretty freaking awesome too. (And before he gives me crap, I know this iPhone photo of a photo doesn’t do justice to Geoff’s photography!)

That’s about all I got for now.

I just looked at that list and I laughed and almost cried. I have been using my office to work already, and it’s been great. Just having my own space makes me feel so good, even though I’m not done and the rest of the house is a mess. I did throw a bunch of boxes into the basement so at least it just looks a little neater in our new living spaces. Now I have to organize the basement but whatever. I can ignore that for awhile.

A Delayed Big Reveal

Week Six is supposed to be the finale but that is this week, so obviously that isn’t happening. The last day we can share our room reveals is November 29th at midnight. Please give me some good juju in the comments section below!

WEEK ONE || WEEK TWO/ THREE || WEEK FOUR || WEEK FIVE || WEEK SIX

The One Room Challenge is a bi-annual event hosted by Calling it Home  showcasing 20 featured participants and many guest participants as they renovate a single room, documenting all of it over the course of six weeks. The One Room Challenge kindly shares all of the blog entries and the finished spaces at the end of the 6 weeks. You can see them by clicking the image. So many good ones!

Leslie Carothers

Chris: I loved reading this post, but what I really want to thank you for is the tip to the GOLD spray paint. I need that in my life and I will get it.

I can’t wait to see this when it’s all done. I know, knowing you, we are in for a treat!

Lisa

Personality. Perseverance. Class. Commitment…you have them all! This room is going to be fabulous!

Janet Lorusso

And yet…you will probably still make more headway than I’m making on mine! On a positive note, that table came out amazing, and Ozzie looks very comfy on his new windowseat perch! And that flocking wallpaper is gonna MAKE the room no matter what else doesn’t get done!

Sarah

The sneak peek looks amazing and Mushu seems right at home with his makeover. Your talents are never ending! I can’t wait to see the final reveal. Do call when you hit the end of the list and win the million!

Sue V
